A Few Thoughts on Transgender Families

transgender-families

A transgender family is the same as any other family – within the family itself. It is how the outside world views a transgender person that is different and tends to make life more difficult. Gender identity is such a deeply personal and important component of one’s self, and transgender adults and kids are just as sure of their identities as cisgender adults and kids are. How do we break down those barriers of perception so that I am seen for myself and not what the viewer’s beliefs are. Is the day, here, where all members of our transgender family can walk proudly and safely with their heads held high? Not yet, but that day is closer.

The understanding that every individual – is indeed an individual and no longer is just a member of one labeled tribe or another continues to be the most basic of human rights battles. Still, gay and transgender families are among some of the most economically vulnerable in the United States. People who come from gay or lesbian or transgender families are being attacked by many different groups, because these people, see little wrong with their actions and who often believe that they have societal permission to engage in such hate crime. Hate-mongering politicians are seen as giving tacit permission for violence.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender families have some unique risk factors because they are often isolated and not well connected in their communities. Not only that, but gay and transgender families are likely battling sex and race discrimination in addition to the economic barriers unique to gay and transgender Americans.

But I do see hope. In a recent debate, Hillary Clinton said this about another persecuted group in the United States – the Muslim Population, and I paraphrase: “We most not only invite, but welcome our Muslim population into our broader society.”

Similarly, the transgender population also needs to be not only tolerated, but welcomed into the broader society. Each of us, irregardless of our gender identity brings so much to the table, but so much more will be brought to the table when our true value and potential is recognized and welcomed.
